Emotional Style

Seven separate things people mean when they talk about emotional intelligence: how openly you show good feeling and hard feeling, how much attention you pay to your own emotions, how much they steer your decisions, and how strongly other people’s joy, distress, and difficulty reach you.

We call the result your Emotional Style rather than your emotional intelligence. The word intelligence claims two things these questions cannot support: that more is better, and that the seven add up to one score. There is no total here, and no end of any of the seven is the good end. The scales are filed in the research literature under emotional intelligence, which is why that is still what the test page is called.

These are self-report questions about what you tend to do, not a test of how well you do it. Nothing here has a right answer, and none of the seven has a good end.

Describe yourself as you generally are now, not as you wish to be in the future. Describe yourself as you honestly see yourself, in relation to other people you know who are roughly your same age.
