The Direct Interpersonal Style

Lets people handle their own problems and gives them room to do it.

The Direct style sits at the Directness end of the interpersonal circle. Someone whose result lands here tends to stay calm, keep to the practical question, and trust other people to look after themselves.

This is the zone where directness is the main habit. A person with this style tends not to ask how everyone is feeling, and does not expect to be asked either. When a coworker says they are stressed about a deadline, the Direct person is likely to ask which part is late and whether they can help with it.

Leading and listening are both in the middle here. The Direct style is not loud and not quiet. It is about how much attention goes to other people's feelings, and the answer is less than in the warmer zones. That is often a kind of respect. The Direct person assumes others are capable, and treats them that way.

The style tends to show best when things go wrong. When a flight is canceled and the group starts complaining, the Direct person is usually already in line to rebook. The cost is that some people wanted comfort first, and they may read the practical help as not caring.

Where this style sits on the circle

The Direct zone sits at the far end of the Warmth or Directness line, close to the middle of the Leading or Listening line. Its neighbors are Outspoken, which adds more speaking up, and Introverted, which adds more keeping to itself.

    This style at its best

At their best, people with this style stay steady when others are upset. When a car breaks down on a road trip, they find the nearest repair shop, call ahead, and work out who rides with whom. Their calm gives everyone else something to lean on.

When this style goes too far

Under strain, giving people room can look like leaving them alone. A friend who calls after a bad week may get good advice when they only wanted someone to listen. The friend may hang up feeling more alone, even though the Direct person meant to help.

What the Direct style is not

The caricature is the cold person who does not care. That confuses a style with a feeling. A person with this style often cares a great deal and shows it by fixing the problem, not by talking about how it feels. Many of them are the first ones to show up when a friend needs help moving.

    Often confused with

    • Outspoken

Both are frank and practical. The Outspoken style argues its view out loud and in front of the group, while the Direct style tends to say less and let people make their own calls.

    • Introverted

Both keep some distance from other people's feelings. The Introverted style also keeps to itself and talks less, while the Direct style is comfortable talking whenever there is a practical point to make.

What a style does not say

A style describes habits, not ability. Landing in a zone says nothing about how well someone leads, listens, or looks after people.

It is also an estimate. The circle places a result in a zone, and a person near the edge of one zone has a lot in common with the zone next to it.
