Kindness

One of the 24 character strengths

Doing things for other people because they need them, without keeping account of what comes back.

Kindness is the strength of doing something for somebody because they need it, without keeping account of what comes back.

The account is the part that matters. Plenty of people help; this strength is the version where nothing is being tracked, so the same person gets helped again next month with no sense that a balance is running.

It tends to be practical rather than expressive. Somebody who leads here notices the specific thing that would help and does that thing, often without announcing it. Frequently it is done for people they have no particular relationship with.

None of it requires warmth of manner. A fairly gruff person can lead here. The giveaway is not how somebody talks, it is what keeps quietly getting done for people who never asked.

What it looks like

A new starter mentions in passing that they have nowhere to sit at lunch. On Tuesday somebody walks past their desk and says they are going down, casually, as though it just occurred to them.

What it costs

Somebody who never counts can be counted on by people who do. This strength has no natural stopping point, so the stopping has to come from somewhere else, and it often arrives late and as exhaustion rather than as a decision.

What Kindness is not

It gets read as softness or as needing to be liked. Neither fits well. Leading here says nothing about whether somebody is warm in manner, and plenty of fairly brusque people do a great deal of quiet, unaccounted-for good.

Often confused with

  • Love

Both are about caring for people. Love is about closeness running in both directions with a few; Kindness is about doing good for anybody, including people who will never reciprocate.

  • Social Intelligence

Both start with noticing a need. Social Intelligence is the reading; Kindness is the doing. They often travel together and do not have to.

What a strength does not say

Everybody has all 24 of these. A result puts them in order within one person, so a strength near the bottom of somebody's list is one they reach for less often rather than one they are missing.

That also means nothing here compares one person with another. There is no reference sample behind these scales, and an order made of somebody's own answers cannot say where they stand next to anybody.
